If a player attends a tryout and is not selected to a fall DSSC-MOSSL team, there are plenty of opportunities in the future…it simply means that the staff would like to see the player develop further and try out next year after playing in DYAA Rec. for another year.
Tryouts - Frequently Asked Questions
Tryout Schedule & Age Group Guidelines
A complete tryout schedule for teams playing during the 2012-13 seasons can be found on our website under Tryouts. Tryout Flyer includes information includes the tryout age group guidelines, dates, times and locations.
The Tryout Process & Evaluation
- You must pre Register online for our tryouts, you can find the registration on our website under "tryouts" If you do not get a chance to register online we will have registration at tryouts you can fill out.
- Tryouts are held over a two day period for each age group. Each tryout session will last approximately 2 hrs. Players are encouraged to attend both days if possible to allow our independent evaluators and coaching staff the opportunity to assess their skills. The more opportunities the evaluators have to see you child, the better their evaluation will be and subsequently the easier it will be to place your child on the correct team.
- The assessment will be on technical ability, small group and game-situation performance. For example, passing, receiving, juggling, shooting, dribbling, heading etc. They will also participate in small group activities such as 2v2, 3v3, 4v4 and/or 5v5. Finally, players are organized into teams and play in a match related environment similar to their age groups league format ( 6v6, 8v8 and/ or 11v11). The first night will focus more on the skills and finish with some small sided play and the second night will focus more on field play.
- At the end of the second night of an age group/gender tryout, the evaluator assessments are supplemented with input from the coaching staff and the Director of Coaching. The evaluation staff is comprised of the Directors of Coaching, the current team’s coaching staff, next year’s coaching staff and independent evaluators.
- When all evaluation is in and rosteres are put together we have a better idea on how many teams we will have in each age grps. The age grps and roster sizes vary on skill level and the number of kids trying out. If we have enough kids to make two teams in one age group then we will make an "A" team and a "B" team, if we have enough for a "C" team then we will do that.
- Age Groups:
- 6V6 U9 and U10 Boys and Girls Maximum roster is 12 minimum is 8
- 8V8 U11 and U12 Boys and Girls Maximum roster is 14 Minimum is 10
- 11V11 U13 and up Maximum roster is 22 minimum is 13
Notification - Did my child make a team?
- At the end of each tryout week, the evaluation team (independent evaluators, coaches and DOC) will meet to review the player’s evaluations and create the teams for next year. Together, the group will work to form the teams. Some teams will be more competitive than others. The focus will be on the developmental needs of each player & team, and will place players in the appropriate level of play
- The staff will begin notifying everyone that participated in tryouts with the results and offer roster spots at 2:00 PM on the Sunday after age group tryouts. This is a League by-law and must be followed by all clubs in central Ohio.
- Every family will receive a phone call from the coach of that team. The process can take a few days depending upon the number of players trying out in a specific age group.
The Calls
- If we are only having one team in your child's age group the coach will be calling all players who have been asked to play first. We would like an immediate response if/ when the offer is extended on Sunday afternoon. If a family needs time to consider the offer, they will have 3 hrs to make a decision to accept or decline the offer to join DSSC. IF we have more then one team, the A team will be making the calls first and once that team have been filled we will move onto the B team, we will NOT be calling the B team until the A team has been finalized. The Coach of the B team will then make his calls. After all teams have been notified the coach of the A team will then call the players who have not made the team(s).
- Please make sure you have provided a phone number where we can contact you on Sunday afternoon. If you will be traveling for a tournament or family vacation, please provide a cell phone number. Not being able to contact a player/family will result in your spot being offered to another player after a reasonable amount of time.
- If your child has not made a team please encourage them to keep working and developing their love for the game. We do offer a recreational soccer DYAA Pre K-5th and MSSA (middle school soccer) 6th-8th grade.
Can my child “play up” an age group
- US Youth Soccer defines the age group for each player. Basically, when trying out, a player in a specific age group cannot turn the age of that age group prior to August 1, of that year. Any child is permitted to play “up” in age if they meet the following requirements: (1) the player receives permission to tryout for an older age group prior to tryouts, and (2) That the player must understand that if they are not chosen for the higher age group and their true age group has already made it's calls they are not allowed to take a spot from another player in their age group. Final decisions are left up to the discretion of the Directors of Coaching.
What is the time and team commitment for a player who joins a team?
- It is extremely important to understand that upon acceptance of an offer to play, the commitment to the soccer program is for one entire year (August through the end of May). The commitment is to be honored by all Parents, Coaches and Administrators of the team.
- All players who have made a team are to participate in the club 50/50 fundraising, Scholarship kids fundraiser. This is mandatory. All players will be asked to sell 10-15 tickets to raise funds for players who are in need of some assistance to play soccer in our club. As a club we are a family and we try to help as many kids as we can, we keep our fee's low to make sure parents are able to make payments. Some families struggle to make this happen so this is a great way for all of us, as a club to help out. The Drawing is picked during our DYAA soccer tournament. The Winner will receive half of what is raised.
Fall Season: August, September, October
- Teams practice 3-4 times per week during the month of August. Once league games begin, teams practice 1-3 times per week based on their age group and game and tournament schedules.

Team Meetings
After offers are extended and accepted, there is much work that needs to be completed over the summer to ensure the players can start the season in August. Uniforms must ordered, paperwork and fees collected, meet the coaching staff and so much more! The team commitment meetings are designed to share information with parents about the upcoming season, allow the players to meet their teammates and to collect paperwork necessary to prepare for the team’s participation in competitive leagues.
